Growing up in Ohio, Patrick McLaughlin started his musical studies by learning to play the piano at the age of 5. Patrick completed his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education at The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. During his time at Youngstown, Patrick studied the piano with Caroline Oltmanns. In 2012, Patrick moved to the DC area to begin working on his Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at The University of Maryland and study with Mayron Tsong. In 2014, Patrick was diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, a neurovascular disorder that affects the arms and hands. Since then, Patrick has shifted his focus from performing to teaching and sharing his love for music.
Patrick has competed in numerous competitions and received many awards and scholarships throughout his musical career. He was awarded scholarships by the Tuesday Musical Association and The Ohio Federation of Music Clubs. He also was a winner in the Dana Young Artist Competition and performed as a soloist with the Dana Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Patrick won first place in the Youngstown Music Teachers Association Scholarship Competition.
As an active teacher, Patrick has experience working with students of all ages and skill levels. Although Patrick has a strong classical foundation, he also enjoys playing and teaching a variety of genres of music. He realizes that each student is different, and adjusts his teaching to fit the needs of his students. Enthusiasm, patience, and creativity are important qualities of any teacher, and Patrick uses these qualities to mold and shape his teaching. Most importantly, Patrick enjoys sharing his passion for music and strives to help his students develop their own passion for music.
